Watch. Engage. Act.
At the same time as social media has exploded in blogs, networking sites, and twitter, climate change has become mainstream: 73% of Britons want their government to make climate change a priority, 40% of Americans, 94% of Chinese, and 59% of Indians. Despite this, there is a value conflict between greening the economy and altering lifestyles to make the green transition successful.
The recent examples are limitless: the September issue of the the Harvard Business Review insists the green economy can “save us” from recession, while at the same time expounding the virtues of limitless GDP growth. 75% of Americans say they believe that greening energy should be a bigger priority for the government than legislating automobile fuel efficiency standards. India provides cars for the masses, with carbon combustion engines that meet European fuel efficiency standards but produce more greenhouse gases than a motorbike.
To add to the green-haze, there is plenty of debate on the practical side of things as well: what’s the best way to achieve zero energy emissions– build more coal plants & attach carbon sequestration technology? if carbon sequestration is so expensive, what’s the point? what about nuclear power– it’s clean?
whose primary responsibility is it to lead a green transition– individuals, national governments, a champion country like Sweden?
and where should regulatory measures come from? at which level of government?
who should pay for retraining labour to compete in a green economy?
should green technology spread free of intellectual property rights?
Whether it’s views and news from advocacy organizations, government, or business, green.tv provides a space for figuring out the best way to move the world forward.
